What Really are the Benefits of Infrared Sauna?

Updated: Aug 12

Infrared saunas are becoming increasingly popular due to their numerous health benefits. Unlike traditional saunas, which heat the air around you, infrared saunas use infrared lamps to warm your body directly. While they have become popular in recent years, there are a lot of claims about their benefits which aren't true. For example, if someone tells you they melt body fat....let's just say, they may be exaggerating this one a little bit. More on this below.

Here are some of the key benefits, and mistruths about Infrared sauna:

  1. Myth: Detoxification: Sweating is not one of the body’s natural ways to eliminate toxins. Sweating is primarily a means of thermoregulation rather than detoxification. Although sweat may contain some chemicals and metals, detoxification is mainly facilitated by the liver and kidneys. Nonetheless, maintaining hydration by sweating can indirectly aid in detoxification.

  2. Fact: Relaxation: The heat from an infrared sauna helps to relax muscles and relieve tension throughout the body, promoting an overall sense of relaxation and well-being.

  3. Fact: Pain Relief: Infrared heat can penetrate tissues, joints, and muscles, which helps to alleviate pain from conditions such as arthritis, muscle soreness, and fibromyalgia.

  4. Fact: Improved Circulation: The heat causes your blood vessels to dilate, which improves circulation and helps oxygenate the body’s cells, leading to better overall health and recovery.

  5. Myth: Weight Loss: Regular use of an infrared sauna can stimulate metabolic activity which does burn calories, which can contribute to weight loss over time. However, making weight loss claims is a bit of an overreaction. consistent exercise and diet will do this far more effectively.

  6. Myth: Cardiovascular Health: The increased heart rate and improved circulation can is beneficial but there is no evidence to support sitting sedentary in a sauna is the same as moderate levels of exercise.

  7. Fact: Stress Reduction: Spending time in an infrared sauna can help reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), which can lead to a reduction in overall stress and anxiety. Coupling this time in the sauna with some breath work or meditation will also help with this.

  8. Fact: Improved Sleep: The relaxing effects of infrared saunas can contribute to better sleep quality and the heating and then cooling of the body can assist with kicking in your circadian rhythm at night which will assist in falling to sleep.

It's important to note that while infrared saunas offer many benefits, they may not be suitable for everyone. People with certain medical conditions or those who are pregnant should consult with a healthcare provider before using an infrared sauna.
